I really love this phone. I've had it for a couple weeks now and haven't had any problems at all. Well...except for one, I can't get into IM..I use MSN messenger and it just keeps saying, "handheld not enabled for this service". I think it has something to do with the phone being unlocked and my carrier...I'm not sure. But other than that, the phone has worked great. I bought it on ebay for $600.

Great cheap Anrdoid testbed, good PMP : Samsung i5500 Corby Galaxy Europa
This is my first smart-phone, although I have used other touch devices like an ipod touch. The goal was to get something cheap that I could use my AT%T prepaid plan with.

First of all, as others have noted, the phone will arrive in some unpredictable eastern european language. In my case, I deduced it was Slovenian by looking up various random words on the display (apparently, "ponedeljek" means "monday"). Unfortunately, changing the language is not all that easy on a device you cannot read. Some languages like Spanish, it's relatively easy to sort out on your own. Slovenian is not that sort of language. I had to resort to a youtube video to figure out which parts of the interface to select. If you have trouble, I suggest you do the same.

Next up, I figured I'd try to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Samsung website tells me to download and install the Kies software, which I do. It connects with the phone and tells me "this version of the device cannot be updated". Not quite sure what to make of that (does it mean the firmware is already updated? or does it mean I'm using eastern european device with US Kies? or is the firmware non-upgradeable?). Anyhow, the 2.1 firmware seems to work well enough, so I decide not to mess with it any further.

After this, I slipped the SIM card in from my cheap AT&T prepaid and verified that it was able to make phone calls. It was, no issues whatsoever.

As far as the general quality of the phone, it seems pretty good. It comes with a 1gb SD card for use with the camera, a charger (with US adapter), USB cable (very short), and headphones. Although a bit small, it fits in my hand relatively well and sounds decent. It passes the obvious tests for doing what a phone needs to be able to do.

I have to gripe a little bit about the touchscreen qwerty keyboard which feels a little small for my fingers. Tilting the screen sideways helps because the keyboard is bigger in landscape mode. It's easy to get a double-keypress; I wish there was a key repeat delay setting. It's also easy to hit the wrong key, but I assume that just takes some getting used to. The 3x4 keyboard for phone calls works fine and has nice big buttons.

Logging into gmail was uneventful. It took my user-id and password. Android marketplace works similarly well. I'm a little bit concerned about security. If I lose my phone, then suddenly someone has access to my email account? Email compromises are the gateway to getting every other service that you use compromised (at least anything that has a password-reset-via-email feature). Going to have to think a bit on that. Maybe disable the email and get my piece of mind back.

I try the built-in navigation app and it says "waiting for location" and sits there until the screen blanks. Not sure what to make of that. The built-in maps program does the same thing. Maybe it's confused because I'm not in Slovenia. Maybe I just need to give it some more time to get a GPS fix. GPS is enabled and the silly thing is sitting in front of a window. Don't know why it can't seem to figure out where it is.

Anyhow, I'm relatively pleased with it so far as it seems to be a good deal for the price I paid. I'm deducting one star for the product arriving configured with a random language which is something a non-technical user (or someone without access to youtube) might have some trouble with. This should be disclosed in the description, or better yet, the phone should ask for a language setting when it's initially turned on.

For as much bragging as this product does about having good bass and a deep range of sound, it falls FAR short of anything close to producing any bass or good sound quality at all. Overall a Pretty Good Player at a Good Price : Sony BDP-BX38 Blu-ray Player with Wi-Fi / Internet Apps and Bonus HDMI Cable
Bought this a few days ago and love it. I opted for this model because 1. It's a Sony and 2. I was intrigued by the remote control app. Blu rays look great. I love the system menu, similar to the PS3.

I don't know why people write negative about it being wireless ready. It clearly says wireless adapter not included on the box. It is wireless ready in that it has a usb port on the back to insert a Sony wifi adapter.


The only thing I would like to see from this device would be the ability to see media servers like the PS3. Sony, if you're reading this, you will make my Christmas card list for that firmware upgrade.

I bought the Sony BDP-BX58 specifically for two reasons: play blu-ray discs and to stream Netflix. I already owned a Roku streaming media box for my upstairs TV and it works great. I almost bought another Roku for my downstairs TV but decided to get an integrated Blue-ray and streaming functionality so I bought the BX58. I have had it for 2 weeks and have had nothing but problems with the streaming functionality. Basically, it is slow (really, really slow) and times out. I have not been able to watch a movie because of the unreliability and slowness of the connection. At first, I thought it was my LAN connection. This is a wired LAN connection, not a wireless. So I decided to get my Robku from my upostairs TV and try it downstairs. I unplugged my BX58 and pluigged my Roku in its place. It worked perfectly. It was fast, reliable, and streamed the movie perfectly. I am thumbs down on the Sonly BX58 and plan on returning it for a full refund. I plan on buying a second Roku box for my downstairs TV. Thumbs up on the Roku box - it delivers!
